How to install a NinjaTrader 8 strategy, step by step
Installing a third-party strategy in NinjaTrader 8 takes about five minutes — and almost every failed install comes from the same two mistakes: unzipping the file first, or skipping the restart. These are the exact steps, using SI-Trader as the worked example. They apply to any properly packaged NinjaScript add-on.
Before you begin
Have ready: the strategy ZIP exactly as downloaded, NinjaTrader 8 open with your data feed connected, and — for a licenced product like SI-Trader — the email address you bought with.
The five steps
- Save the ZIP — do NOT unzip it. NinjaTrader imports the ZIP itself. If you unzip it first, the import will not work as described. This is mistake number one, and it is responsible for most "the file won't import" support emails everywhere.
- Import it in NinjaTrader 8. Go to Tools → Import → NinjaScript Add-On. Select the ZIP file and confirm the import.
- Wait for success, then restart. Wait for the "import successful" message, then restart NinjaTrader completely. Skipping the restart leaves the platform running without the new strategy properly registered — mistake number two.
- Open the right chart. For SI-Trader: a 1-minute chart of your instrument (NQ, MNQ, ES, MES, or CL). SI-Trader only works on a 1-minute chart — it builds its own 3- and 5-minute context internally, so you never need those charts open. Other strategies have their own requirements; the point stands: the chart timeframe in the vendor's guide is a requirement, not a suggestion.
- Add the strategy to the chart. Right-click the chart → Strategies → find the strategy (SI-Trader is listed as "TraderAIAgent") → add it. A licenced strategy starts unactivated at this point — that is expected, not an error.
After installing
Activate the licence (for SI-Trader, through the buyer portal with your Machine ID and order number), load the template for your instrument so the tested starting settings are in place, and run your first sessions on a SIM account while you watch it work. The complete SI-Trader guide — install, activation, templates, a normal trading day, troubleshooting — ships with the product in English, French, and Spanish.
